Component Development for Active Sensors
The Research Center performs growth and characterization of various crystals used for civil and military laser applications. The partnership benefits university research by providing access to samples which would not normally be available; industry partners help drive the research and also get questions answered and tools developed that help them further improve their crystal quality and decrease costs of production.
Ambient Temperature Radiation Detectors
CdZnTe crystals are grown and examined in order to improve their electrical performance for use as radiation detectors. This research will result in large, single crystals of CdZnTe being available at a lower cost. It will also determine the micro-structural and chemical defects and correlate them with their impact on radiation detector performance. For more information about this research, click here.
P3 Micro Power Engine
The P3, or Palouse Piezoelectric Power, engine is a micro power generator that was designed and patented by three CMR members doing research in micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS). It is being built for a specific application of the U.S. military, however it could eventually compete with batteries in the worldwide market.
Positron Annihilation Spectroscopy (Positron Links)
The Center operates a state of the art antimatter research facility located in the Physics department at WSU. The positron beam is counted amoung the best facilities in the world and is used for fundamental and applied physics investigations. Currently a long term research project is underway to store large amounts of positrons to allow for the possibility, amongst others, of antimatter propulsion. This addresses several fundamental issues about storage and the behavior of large densities of positrons.
